SCMP Conversations: Sustainability
We Are Live In
ABOUT THE EVENT
Corporate efforts on sustainability are surging in the wake of COVID-19, driven by the need to re-build better, as well as increased scrutiny from investors and society. While ESG topic is not new, it becomes more of an opportunity to embed it at the heart of corporate strategy, innovation and business decisions – all the while benefiting from immediate gains in efficiency, resilience and more value to share with all stakeholders.
Like the pandemic, climate change is a global crisis affecting all of us, in every country, business, and community. According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP)’s Emissions Gap Report 2020, the world saw a 7 per cent drop in carbon dioxide emissions. Despite the drop being the largest decline on record, the world is still heading for a temperature rise of 3.2°C by the end of this century. This is far beyond the Paris Agreement goals of limiting global warming to well below 2°C. Many businesses want to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and move towards a carbon-neutral future- but where to begin?
Protecting our planet and addressing climate threats should be a boardroom priority. Many leaders are struggling with how to truly embed environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into their day-to-day operations. How can they move beyond a box-ticking exercise to genuinely walk the talk? How can they evolve beyond top-down sustainability edicts to a corporate culture in which everyone in the organization lives, breathes and acts on them? How do organizations forge that mindset, build that corporate muscle, and make the most from their sustainability actions?
